Essie
"Essie" is a portrait of my grandmother, Essie Mae Sann who wrote letters and sent parcels to many soldiers stationed overseas during WW1 and WW2. Luckily, she saved many of the letters she felt were important and I was able to scan them all to use as collage elements. This large portrait of her consists of digital copies of letters she collected during WW1 from many young men who lived near her in Beamsville and Rockton, Ontario. Her dress and details in her figure are shaped by words from a speech entitled "The Three R's of Homemaking" that she wrote and presented to the Women's Institute during WW1.
