Roy Rintoul was a good friend of Essie's who came from the Rockton area and grew up with Essie's son, Gordon. He enlisted in the RCAF in 1942, and his wonderfully descriptive letters are collaged onto two large canvases. In his first letter home, he writes,"...if I have to depend on an English girl for a wife, I'll be single a long time." Of course, he eventually met a young English woman, married her and brought her back to Canada as a war bride."
